The garden idyll belongs to a lineage of Italianate landscape painting that runs from Claude Lorrain's seventeenth-century Roman vistas to the Barbizon-tinged reveries of Jean-Charles Cazin and the Villa d'Este scenes beloved by Grand Tour travelers. Through the nineteenth century, European academic and Romantic painters — Corot among them — returned again and again to the terraced Mediterranean villa: its cypress spires, marble urns, and crumbling arches stood for a vanished, sunlit past.
