A sorceress cradles a teardrop of flame in her bare palm, the fire uplighting her fingers to translucent rose and skimming the underside of her jaw. Bottle-green velvet and gold-thread embroidery emerge from near-black darkness; her half-smile is composed, faintly amused. The mood is hushed enchantment rather than horror. It anchors a candlelit study, a reading nook, or a moody bedroom wall. *(62 words)*

Two traditions meet in this picture. The first is tenebrism — the practice, set in motion by Caravaggio in Rome around 1600 and carried into Spain and the Dutch Republic by the painters who followed him, of carving a figure out of pure darkness with a single low flame. Georges de La Tour built entire nocturnes around a candle held inside the frame, letting the light glow through the fingers that shielded it. The second is the Victorian fascination with the enchantress: John William Waterhouse's The Magic Circle, painted in 1886, gave the sorceress a jeweled, veiled dignity rather than a hag's menace. This print inherits both — Old Master craft, Romantic storytelling — a woman entirely composed with fire in her open hand. *(122 words)*

Printed archival quality on museum-grade 200gsm matte stock, which holds the deep transparent shadows and keeps the flame genuinely luminous. Pair with an ornate baroque gold or dark walnut frame and a warm off-white mat. Part of the Atrecho Art Fantasy | Macabre Collection — gallery wall ready. *(46 words)*

Our Story

Atrecho Art began with an obsession: the art that lines the walls of old European estates — the devotional portraits found in the side chapels of Seville’s cathedral. We are a family-owned small business bringing that spirit home, one print at a time. Thank you for supporting independent art.
