The miracle on the Sea of Galilee — Christ crossing the water toward a storm-tossed boat, recounted in the Gospel of Matthew — became one of Christianity's enduring images of trust held through fear. This rendering is not a narrative illustration, though. The wounds of the crucifixion are shown openly, placing it in the older devotional line of the Salvator Mundi and the blessing Christ of Byzantine icon painting, where the figure faces the viewer rather than an event. That frontal, emotionally legible sacred image was precisely what the Council of Trent called for in 1563 — and what Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Francisco de Zurbarán gave seventeenth-century Seville: warm golden atmosphere, sober weighty drapery, a single figure lifted out of the dark.
