A green woodpecker grips a lichen-crusted branch in strict profile, crimson crown lit from the left, a black malar stripe running back from the pale chisel beak. Its cream breast is scaled in fine crescent barring against a field of oxidized teal, scattered with scarlet berries and a spray of coral filaments. The mood is hushed and watchful — cabinet-of-curiosities quiet. It anchors a study, library, or reading nook.

Rome gave the woodpecker its name and its standing: Picus, the bird sacred to Mars, said in Ovid's telling to have been a Latin king transformed by the sorceress Circe — and the genus Picus still carries it. European green woodpeckers ranged the oak woods and old pasture of the continent, the Iberian population now recognized as its own species, Picus sharpei. Painters of the Dutch and Flemish Golden Age — Melchior d'Hondecoeter, Jan Weenix — set birds in exactly this way, profile against a dark ground, each feather answered in turn; two centuries later Audubon and John Gould formalized the pose into the ornithological plate. This print works in that lineage, its worn verdigris ground and craquelure an aesthetic choice rather than an artifact of age.

Printed archival quality on museum-grade 200gsm matte stock, which holds the bronze wing coverts and the abraded depth of the teal ground — a natural-history plate for the walls of an Old World study. Pair with a distressed dark walnut or wrought iron frame and a natural linen mat. Part of the Atrecho Art Animals Collection — gallery wall ready.

Our Story

Atrecho Art began with an obsession: the art that lines the walls of old European estates — the devotional portraits found in the side chapels of Seville’s cathedral. We are a family-owned small business bringing that spirit home, one print at a time. Thank you for supporting independent art.
