Light from the upper left models his face and small white lace ruff; each wing covert is edged in cream against the void. The mood is proud, grave, quietly aristocratic. Hawking was the privilege of European nobility for centuries — a falcon on the fist declared rank as surely as a sword — and falconer portraits run in a long line from Titian and the Northern Renaissance to the hunting portraiture of the Spanish court. This painting speaks the language of the Caravaggist Baroque: the earthy palette and transparent brown-black ground recall José de Ribera and the young Diego Velázquez of the bodegón years, when Spanish naturalism gave ordinary faces the gravity of kings.
