Three antique earthenware vessels stand shoulder to shoulder on a dark stone ledge — a rust-orange storage jar worn chalky at the rim, a slate-blue amphora with one arched handle, a bone-white oil jar traced with hairline cracks. Soft light falls from the upper left, and the olive-grey wall behind dissolves into empty air. Hushed, monastic, quietly enduring. Above a dining sideboard or a kitchen shelf, it settles a room. *(69 words)*

Francisco de Zurbarán painted little else so quietly radical as his rows of clay vessels. His *Still Life with Pottery Jars*, now in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, sets four ordinary earthenware pots on a bare ledge and lights them like saints. In Counter-Reformation Spain this was not modesty but devotion: the humble object, attentively seen, was itself a spiritual exercise. The bodegón tradition that grew from it treated kitchen pottery — the water jar, the oil jar, the wine pitcher — as worthy of the same reverence as portraiture. Three centuries later, Giorgio Morandi arranged his own bottles in Bologna with the same hush. This print stands in that long line: three vessels, plainly presented, asking to be looked at slowly. *(122 words)*
