The ornamental urn was the defining object of the Neoclassical age. When 18th-century travelers returned from the Grand Tour enthralled by the excavations at Herculaneum and Pompeii, they commissioned garniture vases modeled on the Greek campana krater — festooned with laurel garlands, anthemion, and egg-and-dart borders drawn from Greco-Roman antiquity. Robert Adam wove the motif through English interiors; Josiah Wedgwood cast it in jasperware. Here that antiquarian form is rendered in the tenebrist idiom of the Spanish bodegón — a single relic spotlit against a dark void, in the reverent manner of Zurbarán and Sánchez Cotán. The result is an objet d'art portrait: opulence and stillness held in one frame, waiting for a wall.
