A red squirrel sits upright on a weathered stump, head turned three-quarters toward you, tufted ears alert and a small catchlight gleaming in its dark eye. Its extravagant plume of a tail fans up like a sunburst while roses climb the margin in loose graphite. Quiet, tender, and observational, rendered in warm sepia on aged cream paper. It brings heirloom stillness to a reading nook or study wall.
Long before the camera, European artists studied the natural world one creature at a time. Albrecht Dürer (1471–1528) set the standard with meticulous nature studies such as his 1502 Young Hare, rendering fur and eye with a reverence that treated a small animal as worthy of a master's full attention. That impulse carried into the fine-hatched specimen plates of 18th- and 19th-century zoological illustration, where a single subject floats among lightly indicated botanical accessories on toned paper — half scientific record, half art object. The Eurasian red squirrel, with its tufted ears and famous plume tail, was a favorite of this naturalist eye. This print descends directly from that draftsman's tradition.
