In the later 1600s a small group of Dutch and Flemish painters turned their attention to the forest floor. The genre came to be called *sottobosco* — "under the woods" — and its originator, Otto Marseus van Schrieck, working outside Amsterdam, kept live insects and reptiles on his own property so he could paint them from observation, staging them against grounds of near-total black: the same tenebrist darkness the Spanish *bodegón* painters were working in further south. Jan van Kessel the Elder assembled insects into cabinet panels in Antwerp; Maria Sibylla Merian later paired each creature with its host plant in her engraved studies.
