History
The lighthouse as a subject in European painting reaches back to the Dutch Golden Age, when maritime commerce made the sea both a source of wealth and an object of anxiety. By the 19th century, the Romantic tradition had absorbed this subject and amplified it. The lighthouse became a symbol — of endurance, of guidance, of civilization clinging to the edge of something vast and indifferent.
