Jeanne d'Arc was born around 1412 in Domrémy, a village in northeastern France torn by the Hundred Years' War. At seventeen she convinced the French court she carried a divine mandate; within months she broke the Siege of Orléans and saw Charles VII crowned at Reims. Captured at Compiègne in 1430, she was tried for heresy at Rouen and burned at the stake in 1431, only nineteen years old. Nearly five centuries later, in 1920, the Church canonized her a saint. The tradition of painting her in prayer — armored yet rapt, soldier and mystic at once — belongs to the Baroque devotional imagination, the same tenebrist drama that lit the chapels of Counter-Reformation Spain.
