A bat-winged gargoyle crouches on a pale stone plinth, forearms crossed, long clawed fingers dangling over the edge as it leans out of pitch darkness to watch you — its expression hovering between menace and weary boredom. The most famous gargoyles of Notre-Dame are not medieval at all: the brooding chimeras of its towers were added in the nineteenth century by restoration architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, and his winged, chin-in-hands Stryge became an icon when Charles Méryon etched it gazing over Paris in 1853. The Gothic Revival had fallen in love with the grotesque — and painters could reach back to Francisco de Goya, whose Caprichos and Black Paintings had already shown how goblin-demons rising from a dark ground could carry real human feeling. This creature belongs to that family tree: a cathedral guardian caught off-duty, slumped like a gothic thinker, modeled in spotlit-against-blackness tenebrist drama. Less monster than melancholy sentinel — and every home can use one.
