A speckled frog sits low on a hummock of emerald moss at the edge of dark water, one copper-ringed eye catching a single wet highlight as it gazes up and left toward a pocket of pale evening sky. Coral geranium and blush blossoms flare from the shadow around it. The mood is hushed and faintly enchanted — dignity, not whimsy. It belongs in a study, a library corner, or a dim, wood-panelled hall. *(72 words)*

In the 1660s a Dutch painter named Otto Marseus van Schrieck began making pictures no one had quite made before: the forest floor seen close and low, with frogs, snakes, moths and thistles emerging from a brooding dark ground. The genre took the Italian name *sottobosco* — undergrowth. Van Schrieck kept a plot of land outside Amsterdam where he raised reptiles and insects so he could paint them from life, and his followers, among them Matthias Withoos, carried the idiom across the Golden Age. Rachel Ruysch brought the same discipline to blossoms caught at every stage of bloom and decay. It was a serious argument, made in paint: that a frog on a wet bank deserved the same attention as a duke. This print stands in that lineage. *(129 words)*

Printed on museum-grade archival paper at 200gsm, a matte finish that holds the deep transparent shadows and the golden rim light without gloss. Pair with distressed dark walnut or wrought iron and a warm cream mat. Part of the Atrecho Art Animals Collection — gallery wall ready. *(46 words)*

Our Story

Atrecho Art began with an obsession: the art that lines the walls of old European estates — the devotional portraits found in the side chapels of Seville’s cathedral. We are a family-owned small business bringing that spirit home, one print at a time. Thank you for supporting independent art.
