The drawing itself belongs to a second lineage: the nineteenth-century tree study, in which one venerable oak was treated as a portrait subject. Théodore Rousseau and the Barbizon painters gave individual trees the attention usually reserved for people, while natural-history draughtsmen isolated specimens on wide, bare paper for engraved plates — the same convention of generous margin and faint marginal inscription visible here.
