The Iberian horse — the Andalusian, later formalized as the Pura Raza Española — was the most coveted mount in Europe for close to three centuries. Philip II established royal stables at Córdoba in the sixteenth century to breed a horse of exactly this type: compact, heavy-crested, and capable of the collected, high-stepping gait the Spanish riding tradition prized far above raw speed. Velázquez painted the Habsburg court astride them; in the Dutch Golden Age, Philips Wouwerman set the same horses into low-horizon landscapes under broken cloud. By the Romantic era painters had dropped the rider altogether — a horse at liberty stood for something no owner could claim.
