Sir Edwin Landseer, working under the patronage of Queen Victoria, gave animals the psychological weight previously reserved for human sitters, and a generation of specialists followed him — John Emms and Maud Earl among them — who built careers on the kennel portrait, recording an individual hound with the care a court painter gave a duke. The beagle sat at the humble end of that tradition: bred in England as a small pack scent hound for hunting hare on foot, a working dog rather than a lapdog.
