A veiled woman kneels at a votive altar, lighting a slender taper among a cluster of flames before a statue of the Virgin Mary. Golden candlelight pools across her white lace collar and the Madonna's alabaster robes while the church around her dissolves into velvet dark. The mood is hushed, tender, reverent. It anchors a prayer corner, bedroom, or reading nook in quiet devotion.
In the Spain of the Counter-Reformation, lighting a votive candle before an image of the Virgin was among the most intimate acts of Catholic faith. After the Council of Trent (1545–1563) reaffirmed the veneration of sacred images, Sevillian workshops filled churches with Marian statues and paintings — Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Francisco de Zurbarán among the masters who gave the Immaculate Virgin her tender, downcast grace. The black lace mantilla worn here is the enduring dress of Spanish devotion, still seen in Holy Week processions across Andalusia. This print carries that candlelit sanctuary — a single warm flame emerging from Baroque shadow — onto your wall.
Printed on museum-grade archival paper (200gsm) with a warm matte finish that holds the deep tenebrous shadows and glowing candle-gold of the original. Pair with an ornate baroque gold or dark walnut frame and a cream mat to deepen its chapel-like warmth. Part of the Atrecho Art Religious Collection — gallery wall ready.

Our Story
Atrecho Art began with an obsession: the art that lines the walls of old European estates — the devotional portraits found in the side chapels of Seville’s cathedral. We are a family-owned small business bringing that spirit home, one print at a time. Thank you for supporting independent art.
