After the Council of Trent (1545–1563) reaffirmed the veneration of sacred images, Sevillian workshops filled churches with Marian statues and paintings — Bartolomé Esteban Murillo and Francisco de Zurbarán among the masters who gave the Immaculate Virgin her tender, downcast grace.
